How to Change Pagefile Size and Location in Windows

By Tanveer Singh | Updated Nov 22, 2023

What is a Pagefile and Why is it Important?

The Windows pagefile is a hidden file on your computer that acts as an extension of your RAM. When your computer runs out of RAM, it moves data from your RAM to the pagefile to make more RAM available. This process is called paging.

The pagefile is important because it helps your computer run smoothly. If you don't have enough pagefile space, your computer may start to slow down or even crash.

How to Change the Pagefile Size

To change the pagefile size, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Start button and type "performance" into the search bar.
  2. Click on the "Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows" link.
  3. In the Performance Options window, click on the "Advanced" tab.
  4. Under the "Virtual memory" section, click on the "Change" button.
  5. In the Virtual Memory window, select the drive that you want to store the pagefile on.
  6. Enter the desired pagefile size in the "Initial size" and "Maximum size" fields.
  7. Click on the "Set" button and then click on the "OK" button.

How to Change the Pagefile Location

To change the pagefile location, follow these steps:

  1. Follow steps 1-4 from the previous section.
  2. In the Virtual Memory window, select the "Custom size" option.
  3. Enter the desired pagefile location in the "File name" field.
  4. Click on the "Set" button and then click on the "OK" button.

Tips for Optimizing Pagefile Settings

Here are some tips for optimizing your pagefile settings:

  • The ideal pagefile size is 1.5 times the amount of RAM you have installed.
  • If you have more than 4GB of RAM, you can disable the pagefile.
  • If you are experiencing performance issues, try increasing the pagefile size.
  • If you are using a solid-state drive (SSD), you can set the pagefile size to 0.
