Goodbye to the Fremantle Class Patrol Boats
Royal Australian Navy Decommissions Historic Vessels
Fremantle Class Patrol Boats Replaced by Armidale Class
On June 23, 2005, the Australian White Ensign was hauled down from the Fremantle-class patrol boats, marking the end of an era for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). The Fremantle-class vessels, which began operating in 1979, were gradually phased out by the more advanced Armidale-class patrol boats.
The Fremantle class was designed to provide enhanced seakeeping abilities and improved equipment and weaponry compared to previous patrol vessels. The ships were a vital component of the RAN's coastal patrol force and made significant contributions to Australia's national defense.
With the introduction of the Armidale-class patrol boats, the RAN has upgraded its coastal patrol capabilities with vessels that feature advanced technology and increased versatility. The new patrol boats have been designed to meet the evolving demands of modern maritime operations and enhance the navy's ability to protect Australia's maritime borders.
